Charlotte Cornfield
2023-2024 Annual Report feature
In May of 2023, in harmony with becoming a new mom, Charlotte Cornfield brought her fifth album, Could Have Done Anything, into the world. Recorded with producer Josh Kaufman and released via Next Door Records in Canada and Double Double Whammy / Polyvinyl internationally, the album earned rave reviews from Pitchfork, Exclaim, Dominionated, Paste, Flood, and more.
Story
The single “Gentle Like The Drugs” hit #1 on CBC Radio 3’s chart and Charlotte toured Canada, the US, Europe, and the UK, playing festivals including Nelsonville, Winnipeg Folk Festival, and End of the Road Festival.
FACTOR funding was critical in supporting the recording of Could Have Done Anything and the attendant Marketing and Video campaigns have resulted in exponential growth in followers and subscribers across music streaming, social media, and video platforms.
Once declared by Rolling Stone to be “Canada’s best-kept secret,” Charlotte is now a save-to-playlist favourite to the half-million-plus fans streaming her music millions of times across 130 countries.
Could Have Done Anything is a testament to Cornfield’s uncommon life and all its possibilities, an acknowledgment that the best musicians can turn fleeting moments into timeless songs. Recorded over six days, working swiftly and impulsively in an aim to shrink the gap between having an idea and putting it on tape, the resulting sound is at once elaborate and unrehearsed; there’s a sense that it’s coming together—and coming alive—at the very moment it’s being made.
