Story

Listening to Montreal-based artist Kaya Hoax, you’ll find yourself nodding with a high energy blend of mischief and passive indignation. She first gained attention with her 2020 debut single “Kicker,” which drew from the brash eclecticism of M.I.A, Santigold’s auteur sensibilities, and the futuristic pop of Charli XCX. A self-taught musician with raw talent and a magnetic stage presence, she quickly became a standout in the Montreal music scene, performing alongside artists like Jesse Mac Cormack, Hubert Lenoir, Sophia Bel and Marie Davidson. After working full-time as a nanny for three years, Kaya Hoax was able to record and curate a distinctive vision of bassey hype songs for irreverent femme vibes.

In May 2024, she released her debut EP Baby Gear, which quickly generated significant buzz. This album boldly explores themes of fertility and creation across six tracks that navigate between motherhood and estrangement, bravado and vulnerability. Drawing on UK grime, dancehall, and punk influences, the EP features colossal beats, sharp digital instrumentation, hyperactive hooks, and infectious bass lines. Baby Gear is a high-energy collection of digital bangers that has rapidly put this emerging artist in the spotlight.

What impact has FACTOR funding had on the success of the project you’re sharing with us today?

In my Artist Development year, I developed and released a 6-song EP entitled “Baby Gear”. With the support of FACTOR, I was able to invest in proper marketing which significantly increased the visibility of my project. I was also able to invest in quality sound recording and video production which were instrumental in building my visual brand as an artist. Since the EP has been out in the world, I’ve had the privilege to perform in some of Quebec’s most important festivals, such as Osheaga, FME, M pour Montréal and Le Festif. Thank you so much for supporting my music and allowing me to grow as an independent artist in Canada!
